Therapeutic Horseback Riding Centers

Dream Catchers Therapeutic Riding Center – A therapeutic Horseback riding program located in Williamsburg designed specifically for children with special needs.  For more information check out their website www.dreamcatcherswilliamsburg.org

Special Olympic Activities on the Peninsula

Hampton

  • Basketball – Starting in December. Sundays at 3pm at Phoebus High School.  Call David Smith or Nancy (757) 722-4420 or (757) 766-2027.
  • Bowling – Started in October at Langley Air Force Base.  Please call coordinator David Smith (757) 722-4429.
  • Swimming – Wednesdays from 7-8pm at the Hampton YMCA.  Call Coach Jane Hobbs at (757) 722-4429.

Newport News

  • Basketball – Started the first weekend in December.  Call coach Daniel Beigun at (757) 482-9947 if interested in participating.
  • Bowling – Wednesday’s from 4-5:30 PM at Denbigh AMC Lanes.  Call coach Virginia Higgins (757) 599-5288.

Williamsburg

  • Swimming – Saturdays 10:45-12 at James City Rec. Center, starting in January.  Call coach Christine LeMaire (757) 565-0686.
  • Basketball – Fridays from 6:00-7:30 starting in January.  Contact Coach Tim Warren at (757) 564-8640.
York County
  • Swimming – Starts in January. Contact Jack Fishman at (757) 868-8958.
  • Roller Skating – Wednesday’s 5:30 – 6:30 PM. Main Street Skating Rink in Newport News. Contact Betty Hancock at 826-6759.
  • Bowling – Mondays from 4-5:30pm at AMF York Lanes in Grafton.  Call Kathy Hoffman at (757) 898-0608.

Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st - Camping Trip

Cabins or tents available.  $10 and help bring food for one meal.  This is great fun!!  However, we can only take a set amount of kids so please call Vickie ASAP to discuss details and reserve a spot.

Kid-Smart Gymnastics - held on Mondays 6:30 - 7:30 PM at World Class Gymnastics in Newport News.

Kid-Smart Martial Arts - For individuals 5-years and older

  • Gloucester*NEW* Held at the Boys and Girls Club of Gloucester, 7066 Hayes Shopping Center. Call for day and time.

  • Hampton – Tuesdays, 6-7 PM at Northhampton Community Center.  Contact Vickie @ (757) 875-9168 for more information.

  • Newport News – Mondays, 6:30 - 7:30 PM at the World Outreach Worship Center in Denbigh.  Contact Kay (757) 868-3319 for more information.

  • It is also taught in the Newport News Schools as part of the Community Based Instruction program.

  • Williamsburg – Saturdays, 2-3 PM at Baeplex on John Tyler Highway.

"SMART" Outlaws Cheer Leading/Dance Program for Special Needs Individuals.

  • Gloucester - *NEW* Fridays from 6-7 PM at the Boys & Girls Club of Gloucester, 7066 Hayes Shopping Center, classes begin January 9.

  • Newport News – Tuesdays 6-7 PM Richneck Outlaws Studio Warwick Blvd., Newport News.

Kid-SMART Power Lifting - Sundays 3-5 PM Sentara Health & Fitness in Newport News.

Kid-SMART Swim Smart

  • Newport News - Saturdays at 10 AM – 11 AM at the Peninsula Boys & Girls Club in Newport News (Denbigh).

  • York County – Saturdays at 3 PM – 4 PM at Victory Family YMCA, 101 Long Green Boulevard.  These classes teach basic swimming skills to special needs individuals **ALL beginning swimmers MUST have their own "buddy" to be in the water with them.  The "buddy" does not have to be able to swim but must be at least 18 years of age.

“Steppin’ Smart” – Saturday, 2-3 PM at victory Family YMCA, Yorktown.  An aerobics class for special needs individuals 5yrs and older.

“Computer SMARTS” – Thursdays, 7 PM – 8 PM.  Peninsula Boys & Girls Club, 429 Thorncliff Drive, Newport News.  Only 10 students per class. Number and alphabet recognition is a minimal requirement.

“SMART Acting” – A drama club for special needs individuals.  Starting Friday, March 12, 2004, 7-8 PM at Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Newport News.

”SMARTEE’s” Golf Program  - for special needs individuals and a guardian—offered a couple of times a month.

“Arts and Crafts” - monthly classes for special needs persons.

“Tot Smart Play Group” for special needs kids age 2-5 on Saturday afternoons.
