Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Best Practice Guidelines for Screening, Diagnosis and Assessment is the product of nearly a year's work by experts in the field of autistic spectrum disorders. Based on validated scientific evidence, clinical experience and clinical judgment, the Guidelines provides professionals, policymakers, parents and other stakeholders with detailed "best practice" recommendations and rationale for screening, evaluating and assessing individuals suspected of having autistic spectrum disorders. The result of several concurrent events-most recently, a Wellness Initiative grant requested by the principal co-authors of the guidelines and a mandate by the California state legislature-the publication represents state-of-the art practice in the field and, as directed by Assembly Bill 430 sections 25 and 26, provides standards for diagnostic tools and methods to "ensure consistency and accuracy of diagnosis of autism disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders throughout California."
Latest CDC Study Confirms High Autism Prevalence The latest study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that the prevalence of autism in the United States is exploding. The study, which was conducted in Atlanta, GA, in 1996 and published in the January 1, 2003, edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, reveals that the prevalence of autism increased tenfold over the previous decade. The report confirms information previously published by the Autism Society of America (ASA) that autism is growing at a geometric rate, and much more needs to be done to reverse this disturbing trend. The study, conducted in five metropolitan counties in Atlanta, found that 987 of 289,456 children aged 3 to 10 had some form of autism. The report found that the overall prevalence rate was 3.4 per 1,000, which is consistent with previous CDC and ASA estimates. "ASA believes that the current CDC study along with other studies in the U.S. and abroad overwhelmingly confirm that we are in the midst of a national and international health care crisis," ASA President Lee Grossman said. "In addition to the human cost on those with autism and their families, we are all facing the enormous cost of autism as a society." For more information about the study, visit the ASA Web site www.autism-society.org. Home
