Liela Shirley and Larry Lohrman founded the Peninsula Autism Society in March of 1990. They began by holding several in-services on autism in the community back in 1989 and early 1990 to see if parents, professionals, and others would be interested in forming a chapter on the Peninsula. A list of names was obtained, and people were contacted, a meeting site was found and from there, the chapter was formed. Liela continued as president of the chapter for the next five years. The presidency was taken over by Brenda Griffin in 1996; she held office for 3 years, and in 1999, Deborah Warren was elected president, who served office for three years.
