History  Purpose What We Provide

History

Liela Shirley and Larry Lohrman founded the Peninsula Autism Society in March of 1990. They began by holding several in-services on autism in the community back in 1989 and early 1990 to see if parents, professionals, etc. would be interested in forming a chapter on the Peninsula. A list of names was obtained, and people were contacted, a meeting site was found and from there, the chapter was formed.  Liela continued as president of the chapter for next five years.  The presidency was taken over by Brenda Griffin in 1996; she held office for 3 years, and in 1999, Deborah Warren was elected president, who served office for three years. Our current president Linda Pinkus is serving her second term.  The chapter has grown much over the years, due to some very dedicated people. We now support over 350 families on the Peninsula and beyond.  Our newsletter has a circulation of over 600; we hold an annual teacher's workshop, parent workshops and have a parent to parent support system.  And, this all began with two dedicated individuals almost 15 years ago, and more dedicated volunteers since then. Without these dedicated people we would not be where, we are today.

Our Purpose Is

To provide information to individuals with autism (see fact sheet), their families, friends, educators and professionals in the Virginia Peninsula area. We educate the community about autism. Inform parents and professionals about the available resources in the community and we serve as a support system, and advocate for individuals with autism

We Provide

Meetings and Support Groups

Our chapter meets monthly on the second Monday of the month except for August in Newport News and the last Thursday of the month except July and August in Williamsburg.  All meetings are open to the public. Speakers include members of the medical, educational, therapeutic, recreational, and legal communities.

Newsletter

We publish a newsletter quarterly with a circulation of over 700. The newsletter keeps chapter members informed about information on autism and related disorders. The chapter also provides an email list to keep chapter members updated on a regular basis about regional workshops, meetings, recreational events, all chapter events and occasional national news.

Resource List

Our Resource Directory provides a comprehensive listing of contacts in the Virginia Peninsula Area in addition to State wide and some national listings to support the wide range of needs of persons with autism and their families.

Lending Library

We maintain a lending library of books, pamphlets, and videos on issues related to autism, special education and related disorders. Members may check out these materials through our Information and Referral coordinator Cindy Favret.

Parent-to-Parent Support System

A list of parents is kept in our parent directory that are willing to speak to other parents who may have questions or just need someone to talk with.
